What is grayscale image?
Grayscale image: An image with a single channel per pixel that records only brightness, from black through grey to white. Converting to grayscale cuts data to a third of RGB and is used when colour carries no useful information, such as in document scanning.
Grayscale image: an example
A common conversion is gray = 0.299 R + 0.587 G + 0.114 B, so an orange pixel (255, 165, 0) becomes about 173.
