What is image gradient?
Image gradient: The rate and direction of brightness change at each pixel, computed from differences between neighbouring pixels. Its magnitude highlights edges and its direction says which way they run; it is the base of edge detectors and descriptors like HOG.
Image gradient: an example
If the pixel to the right is 200 and the one to the left is 100, the horizontal gradient there is about (200 - 100) / 2 = 50.
