What is image pyramid?

Image pyramid: A set of copies of one image at progressively smaller resolutions, each usually half the size of the last. Searching every level lets an algorithm find objects or features of different sizes with one fixed-size detector, and it underlies many classic matching methods.

Image pyramid: an example

A 640 x 480 image yields levels of 320 x 240, 160 x 120 and 80 x 60; a face detector with a fixed 24 x 24 window finds large faces at the coarse levels.
