What is instance segmentation?
Instance segmentation: Labelling each pixel with its class and also with which individual object it belongs to, so two cars get separate masks. It combines detection with pixel-level outlines. It is needed when objects must be counted or handled one by one.
Instance segmentation: an example
A model outputs three separate masks for three people standing side by side.
