What is edge detection?
Edge detection: Finding locations where image brightness changes sharply, which usually mark object boundaries. Classical methods convolve the image with gradient kernels and threshold the result, and early CNN layers learn similar detectors on their own.
Edge detection: an example
Running an edge detector on a photo of a coin outputs a thin bright circle where the coin meets the table.
