What is sobel operator?
Sobel operator: A pair of 3 x 3 kernels that estimate the horizontal and vertical brightness gradients of an image, with some smoothing built in. Combining their outputs gives edge strength and direction cheaply.
Sobel operator: an example
The horizontal Sobel kernel is [[-1, 0, 1], [-2, 0, 2], [-1, 0, 1]], which responds strongly to vertical edges.
