What is channel?
Channel: One of the separate layers of values that together describe each pixel or feature map location. A colour photo normally has three channels (red, green, blue), while inner layers of a neural network can have hundreds of channels, each responding to a different learned pattern.
Channel: an example
An RGB image of shape 224 x 224 x 3 has 3 channels, and a convolutional layer with 64 filters outputs a feature map with 64 channels.
