What is pseudonymization?
Pseudonymization (also called pseudonymisation): Replacing direct identifiers, such as names, with codes or tokens while keeping the mapping separately, so the data cannot be linked to a person without extra information. It lowers risk but the data is still personal data under the GDPR.
Pseudonymization: an example
A research team replaces patient names with random IDs and stores the lookup table in a separate, access-controlled system.
