What is anonymization?
Anonymization (also called anonymisation): Irreversibly transforming personal data so that no individual can be identified, by any means reasonably likely to be used. Truly anonymous data is generally outside privacy law, but it is hard to achieve, as combining datasets can re-identify people.
Anonymization: an example
A hospital publishes only aggregate counts of cases per district, with no records that could point to any patient.
