What is re-identification?
Re-identification (also called de-anonymization): Working out who a supposedly anonymous record belongs to by linking it with other data, such as combining a date of birth, pin code and gender with a public list. It is why removing names alone does not make a dataset anonymous.
Re-identification: an example
A released 'anonymous' delivery dataset is matched with public social-media posts about the same orders, revealing customers' identities.
