What is alerting?
Alerting: Automatically notifying people, through email, chat or paging, when a measurement crosses a threshold or a pattern appears. Good alerts are actionable and rare enough to be trusted; too many cause alert fatigue.
Alerting: an example
An alert messages the on-call engineer when the error rate is above 5% for ten minutes.
