What is AZ (availability zone)?
Availability zone (also called AZ): An isolated location within a cloud region, with its own power, cooling and networking, connected to other zones by fast links. Spreading a service across zones protects it from the failure of a single data centre.
Availability zone: an example
A database is replicated across three zones in one region, so a power cut in one leaves service running.
