What is base image?
Base image: The starting image named on the first line of a Dockerfile, on top of which everything else is layered. Choosing a small, maintained base reduces download size, build time and the number of known security flaws inherited by the final image.
Base image: an example
Switching a base image from a full Debian variant to a slim variant can cut an image from about 1 GB to about 200 MB.
