What is container runtime?
Container runtime: The low-level software that actually pulls images, creates isolated processes and runs containers on a machine. Kubernetes talks to it through a standard interface; well-known examples are containerd and CRI-O, and Docker Engine uses containerd underneath.
Container runtime: an example
A Kubernetes node running containerd starts a pod's containers without needing the full Docker command-line tool installed.
