What is overplotting?
Overplotting (also called alpha transparency): A problem where so many points share the same space in a chart that they hide each other, making density impossible to judge. Remedies include making points partly transparent, shrinking them, sampling, binning into hexagons, or using a density plot.
Overplotting: an example
A scatter plot of 5 million taxi trips looks like a solid blob until alpha=0.05 is used to reveal dense areas.
