What is colormap?
Colormap (also called colour map, cmap): A mapping from numeric values to colours, used by heatmaps, scatter plots and maps. Sequential ones run from light to dark for ordered magnitudes, diverging ones have a neutral midpoint for values above and below a centre, and categorical ones give distinct colours to groups. A poor choice can mislead.
Colormap: an example
Using a diverging colormap centred on zero for a correlation heatmap shows positive and negative values in different hues.
