What is data-ink ratio?
Data-ink ratio (also called chartjunk): A design principle from Edward Tufte that says most of a chart's ink should display data rather than decoration. It encourages removing heavy gridlines, borders, 3-D effects and redundant labels so the message is clear. It is a guide to judgement, not a strict rule.
Data-ink ratio: an example
Removing a chart's background shading, box border and 3-D bars so only the bars and light gridlines remain.
