What is file permissions?
File permissions (also called Permission bits): Settings on each file that say who may read, write or execute it. They are split into three groups: the owner, the owner's group and everyone else. Correct permissions protect data and are a frequent cause of Permission denied errors.
File permissions: an example
-rw-r--r-- means the owner can read and write, while group and others may only read.
