What is file ownership?
File ownership (also called chown): The record of which user account and which group a file belongs to, which decides which permission set applies to whoever is accessing it. The chown command changes it. Wrong ownership often appears after running commands with elevated rights.
File ownership: an example
ls -l shows asha staff beside a file, meaning user asha and group staff own it.
