What is numPy?
NumPy: A Python library for fast numerical work on large grids of numbers. It supplies a typed multi-dimensional array and a large set of functions that operate on whole arrays at once, with the heavy loops running in compiled C code. Most of the Python data and machine learning ecosystem is built on top of it.
NumPy: an example
Adding two lists of a million marks with a Python loop is slow; converting them to NumPy arrays and writing a + b does the same job in a few milliseconds.
