What is sample rate?
Sample rate (also called Sampling rate): The number of audio measurements taken per second when sound is digitised, in hertz. By the Nyquist rule it must be at least twice the highest frequency to be captured, so speech systems typically use 16 kHz and music 44.1 or 48 kHz.
Sample rate: an example
Phone-call audio at 8 kHz holds frequencies up to 4 kHz, while 16 kHz audio keeps clearer consonants for speech recognition.
