What is data serialization?
Data serialization (also called Serialisation): Converting in-memory data structures into a sequence of bytes or text for storage or transmission, and rebuilding them later. Formats differ in size, speed, readability and how well they handle changing schemas.
Data serialization: an example
A Python dictionary is serialised to JSON to send over an API, or to Avro to place on a Kafka topic.
