What is RPN (region proposal network)?

Region proposal network (also called RPN): A small network attached to a backbone that scores anchors for objectness and refines their boxes, outputting candidate regions. It replaced slow hand-crafted proposal methods in Faster R-CNN. Because it shares computation with the classifier, proposals cost little extra time.
