What is ALTER TABLE?
ALTER TABLE: The DDL statement that changes an existing table, for example adding or dropping a column, changing a type or adding a constraint. On large live tables it can lock the table or rewrite data, so it needs planning.
ALTER TABLE: an example
ALTER TABLE customers ADD COLUMN pincode CHAR(6); adds a new column to every row.
