What is intrinsic motivation?
Intrinsic motivation (also called Intrinsic reward): A learner-generated bonus for novelty, surprise or learning progress, added to the external score to encourage exploration where feedback is rare. It is used in games and robotics with very sparse rewards.
Intrinsic motivation: an example
A bonus proportional to the prediction error of a learned model rewards visiting unfamiliar screens.
