What is determinant?
Determinant: A single number computed from a square matrix that tells how much the matrix scales area or volume, with a negative sign if it flips orientation. A zero value means the matrix collapses space and cannot be inverted.
Determinant: an example
det([[1,2],[3,4]]) = 1*4 - 2*3 = -2, so areas double in size and orientation flips.
