What is SMOTE?
SMOTE: Synthetic Minority Over-sampling Technique: it creates new minority-class examples by picking a minority point and one of its nearest minority neighbours and generating a point at a random position on the line between them. It reduces the overfitting of plain duplication.
SMOTE: an example
Between two fraud cases with amounts 900 and 1,100, SMOTE might create a synthetic fraud with amount 1,020, with other features interpolated similarly.

Where you learn it
SMOTE is part of the AI Engineering Program, which teaches it with notes, a hands-on lab and an exam. The first lesson is free.
