What is membership inference attack?
Membership inference attack: An attack that tests whether a specific record was part of a model's training data, usually by noticing that models are more confident on examples they have seen. It threatens privacy, for instance by revealing that a person's medical record was used.
Membership inference attack: an example
Given a patient's record, an attacker sees the model is unusually confident about it and concludes it was probably in the training set.
