What is IEEE 754?
IEEE 754: The widely adopted technical standard that defines how floating-point numbers are represented and how arithmetic on them behaves, including special values such as infinity and not-a-number. Nearly all modern processors follow it.
IEEE 754: an example
Under IEEE 754, dividing 1.0 by 0.0 in floating point gives infinity rather than crashing in many languages.
