What is lawful basis?
Lawful basis (also called legal basis for processing): A legally recognised reason for processing personal data, such as consent, a contract, a legal obligation or legitimate interests. Under the GDPR, an organisation must identify one before processing; other laws use different lists of grounds.
Lawful basis: an example
An online shop processes a customer's address under the contract basis because it is needed to deliver the order, but asks for consent for marketing emails.
