What is NER (named entity recognition)?
Named entity recognition (also called NER, Entity extraction): The task of finding spans of text that name real-world things and labelling their type, such as person, organisation, location, date or amount. It turns free text into structured data and is usually solved as sequence labelling.
Named entity recognition: an example
In "Infosys hired 200 people in Pune on 3 March", it tags Infosys as ORG, Pune as LOC and 3 March as DATE.
