What is DNN (deep neural network)?

Deep neural network (also called DNN): A neural network with several hidden layers stacked between input and output. The extra depth lets it compose simple features into progressively richer ones, which often generalises better than a very wide shallow network for structured data like images and text.

Deep neural network: an example

A 50-layer image network is deep; a network with a single hidden layer of 1,000 units is usually called shallow.
