What is grain?
Grain (also called Granularity): The precise level of detail that one row of a fact table represents, such as one order line or one daily total per store. Declaring it first prevents mixing levels and double counting.
Grain: an example
A sales fact at order-line grain has one row per product in an order, not one per order.
