What is demographic parity?
Demographic parity (also called statistical parity): A fairness criterion requiring that the rate of positive predictions be the same across groups, regardless of the true outcomes. For instance, the share of applicants shortlisted should be equal for each group. It is easy to compute but ignores real differences in qualification.
Demographic parity: an example
If 30% of male applicants are shortlisted, demographic parity asks that about 30% of female applicants are shortlisted too.
