What is data provenance?
Data provenance (also called data lineage for AI): A record of where data came from, who collected it, under what terms and how it was changed on its way into a dataset or model. Good provenance lets teams check licences, consent and quality, and trace problems back to their source.
Data provenance: an example
A team's training set documents that each of its 20,000 images came from a licensed vendor, with the date and consent terms.
