What is SSL (TLS)?
TLS (also called SSL, Transport Layer Security): Transport Layer Security is the protocol that encrypts data between a client and server and verifies the server's identity with a certificate. It is what turns plain HTTP into HTTPS and successor to the older SSL.
TLS: an example
A TLS handshake agrees on encryption keys before your API key is sent.
