What is reduction?
Reduction (also called aggregation function): An operation that collapses many values along an axis into fewer values, such as sum, mean, min, max or standard deviation. Giving an axis controls which dimension is collapsed, and keepdims=True keeps the collapsed axis as length 1 so results still broadcast.
Reduction: an example
a.sum(axis=0) on a (100, 3) array returns 3 column totals; a.sum() returns one grand total.
