What is home directory?
Home directory (also called Home folder): The personal folder assigned to a user account, where documents and user-level settings are kept. The tilde character stands for it in most shells. New terminal sessions usually start there, and configuration files such as shell profiles live in it.
Home directory: an example
cd ~ takes you to /home/asha on Linux or /Users/asha on macOS.
