What is convex set?
Convex set: A collection of points in which the straight line segment between any two members lies entirely inside the collection. Circles, half-planes and boxes qualify; a crescent shape does not. Optimising over one is far better behaved.
Convex set: an example
The unit disc x^2 + y^2 <= 1 is convex: any two points inside it are joined by a segment that stays inside.
