Short answer: after 12th, the most common route is a degree in computer science, IT, AI and data science, or a related engineering or maths subject, while you learn Python, maths for AI and machine learning on the side and build projects every year. A degree helps with some employers, but your skills and portfolio decide most interviews for AI engineering roles.

Degree options that lead to AI engineering

  • B.Tech / B.E. in computer science, IT, or AI and data science: the most direct route.
  • B.Sc in computer science, mathematics or statistics, often followed by projects or a master's degree.
  • BCA, followed by strong self-study and projects (and sometimes an MCA).
  • Other engineering branches: many people move into AI engineering by learning to code and building projects.

There is no single "AI engineer degree". Choose a course you can complete well, and use the time to build skills.

What to learn alongside college

  1. Year 1: Python, Git and the command line. Build small tools and put them on GitHub.
  2. Year 2: maths for AI (vectors, derivatives, probability), SQL and data handling, classical machine learning.
  3. Year 3: deep learning and transformers, then building with LLMs: LLM apps, RAG and evaluation.
  4. Year 4: agents, deployment and one larger project that solves a real problem.

Projects that show you are ready

  • A command-line tool with tests.
  • A machine learning model on real data with an honest evaluation.
  • A RAG assistant over real documents, with citations.
  • An agent that uses tools safely.
  • One deployed project anyone can open.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Waiting for final year to start building.
  • Learning only from short videos without writing code.
  • Collecting certificates instead of projects.
